Factors to Consider for Choosing the Strongest Impact Driver
Impact drivers are way more lightweight and smaller than drills, but in this small size you will find a lot of power. The right impact driver for you depends on your needs. We always like to advise to make a list of things you will mostly use your tool and make your choice according to that.
Now, there are some factors that you should consider choosing the strongest impact driver!
Let`s talk about each factor separately:
Design & Usability
The first factor that you should consider is the design and usability of the tool. We have already mentioned that impact drivers are lightweight and compact size but among different models, you have to find the one that is the most suitable for you!
You will also have to finish some task in a very tight space, and for that reason, the size is very important. This maybe sounds crazy, but the design has a noticeable impact on performance.
Torque and Performance
The impact drivers offer a better amount of torque, so you don’t have to worry about pushing the screw much. This is an added advantage when you are working on hard surfaces.
Impact drivers don’t have torque control, like cordless drills. You control the torque by speed control trigger. You squeeze the trigger and the chuck starts turning. The further you pull the trigger in, the more torque will be delivered, and the faster the chuck will turn. The more you release the trigger, the less torque and speed will be delivered.
Impact drivers are much more powerful. With the additional torque supplied by their hammer and anvil mechanism, they can produce both high torque and high speed. With impact driver, you will drive screws and drill holes much faster than with a cordless drill driver or screwdriver.
Battery life is how many full charge cycles a battery can complete before it needs to be replaced. If a battery is at full power and it runs out completely and then is charged up to full power again, that is 1 full charge cycle. For example, Li-ion batteries have around 600 charge cycles before its capacity falls under 85-80%.
Battery and Charging
You will definitely like to have a battery which will hold the charge for a long time and the one that is fully charged for the shortest possible time. If that is the case, we advise lithium-ion batteries. They hold the charge much longer than other types and plus they are very lightweight. Some producers are offering extra fast chargers, which can charge the batteries in less than 30 minutes.
We advise you to check carefully the warranty period for the tool you want. We consider warranty as a very important factor. On today’s market, there are various warranty options, for tool and batteries and chargers as well. From 30 days to Lifetime warranties. It is up to you. But we advise to look at the tools with longer warranty periods. Just like to be secured!
Impact drivers are available in 12V, 18V and 20V versions. 12V is more appropriate for DIY tasks. They are powerful; we don’t put any questions on that, but simple they are not powerful enough for professionals or heavy duty tasks. For professionals and heavy-duty tasks more appropriate would be to choose 18V or 20V.
Generally, the higher the tool’s voltage, the heavier it will be – this is because a larger battery and motor is needed to power the tool. The heavier the tool is, the more strain your arm and wrist will be under when working.
Motor: brushed or brushless?
We would say at the very beginning of this discussion; Go with brushless! Even though it will cost you more, a model with a brushless motor should serve you well in the long run.
Tools with brushed motors are cheaper but brushed motors are louder, require periodic maintenance if brushes need to be cleaned and replaced throughout the motor’s lifetime.
On the other hand, brushless motors are more expensive but they are quieter than brushed motors, they require little or no maintenance due to the lack of brushes, impact driver with brushless motor have more compact design, brushless motors can deliver higher levels of torque and speed simultaneously.
Over-mold and Ergonomics
Impact drivers are considered as ergonomic because of the size and weight. These tools are much lighter than other cordless tools and have a very compact and small size. Weight shouldn’t necessarily be the primary factor in deciding which tool to purchase. A tool may be lightweight but it’s no good if it doesn’t have enough power to complete the task at hand! However, weight should still be a consideration. A tool may have the required power but it’s no good if it’s so heavy you can only use it for a very short period of time!
What we think is an important thing also is to have a solid grip on the handle. Some models will have a rubber grip, while others will just have contours in the tool’s casing. Rubber over mold around the handle will provide you comfort. It will be nice to have over mold around the sides of the motor housing, as well. It will protect the tool plastic housing when the impact driver falls.
Work light and Belt Hook
The standard feature on impact driver should be LED lights. They are a great feature when working in dark areas. You don’t have to carry flashlights with you anymore. If you are a professional and you are using your tool daily, you know how big problems you have if you are at the leaders and you have to put the tool down for a second. With the belt hook, you can forget about that problem! Hanging the tool from the hook on your side is much easier than carrying it around or picking it up and setting it down again.
With an impact driver, you will be able to do a lot of stuff by yourself, around the house and at the site. Choosing the right and the strongest impact driver will be challenging. There is no one perfect driver; it is all about personal opinion. But with our help, you will be able to make your choice in just a few minutes.
